This course provides the student with a broad survey of human growth and development from the perspective of the discipline of psychology. The primary goal of this course is to acquaint the student with a multidimensional approach to studying human growth and development across the lifespan involving theory, research, and practical applications using the domains of physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional development and exploring a variety of contexts across the life-span with an emphasis on theories and research.

- Gain knowledge of the field of developmental psychology, main theories and research methods used to gather empirical evidence. (This addresses SLCC's Academic Student Learning Outcome # 1)
- Demonstrate an understanding of the basics of research methodology as a way of acquiring knowledge about human development. (Addresses SLCC's Academic Student Learning Outcome # 1)
- Acquire an understanding of the processes by which we grow and develop in each of the three main dimensions: physical, cognitive, socioemotional. (Addresses SLCC's Academic Student Learning Outcome #1)
- Understand the role of nature (genetics, biological maturation) and nurture (environmental, social, cultural) in our growth and development. (Addresses SLCC's Academic Student Learning Outcome #1)
- Demonstrate knowledge of the patterns of change and growth through the lifespan, drawing on empirical research findings and case study information. (Addresses SLCC's Academic Student Learning Outcome #1)
- Make connections between material provided in the class and text and the "real world" with practical applications. Relate class information to self, family, social groups, and humankind in general. (Addresses SLCC's Academic Student Learning Outcome # 4 & 5)
- Gain knowledge about the role of culture and diversity in growth and development and of the range of differences and similarities between peoples. (Addresses SLCC's Academic Student Learning Outcome # 1 & 5)
- Increase critical thinking skills through evaluation of competing theories, hypotheses and case studies. Demonstrate ability to take multiple perspectives, and to reason from different subjective points of view. (Addresses SLCC's Academic Student Learning Outcome #4)
