PART I: EARTHQUAKES
Signature assignment: Earthquakes and volcanoes
PART II: VOLCANOES
For this component of the assignment, you need to find four types of volcanoes. Download the Google Earth document here, which shows the locations of volcanoes around the world and gives information on their type and history.
composite volcano
Fuji Honshu (Japan) Volcano types: Stratovolcano Pyroclastic cones Summit Elev: 3776 m Latitude: 35.358°N Longitude: 138.731°E Transform Boundarie |
shield volcano
Zukur Red Sea Volcano types: Shield volcano Pyroclastic cones Lava domes Summit Elev: 624 m Latitude: 14.02°N Longitude: 42.75°E Spreading boundarie this a convergent boundarie disappearing. It means that the elevation is not constant and the forces made the volcano dissapear |
a cinder cone
Cerro Negro Nicaragua Volcano types: Cinder cones Summit Elev: 728 m Latitude: 12.506°N Longitude: 86.702°W because there is a Convergent boundary that elevated that mountain (volcano) causing magma to move out of the continent surface |
a caldera
Great Sitkin Andrean of Islands Volcano types: Stratovolcano Caldera Lava dome Summit Elev: 1740+ m Latitude: 52.076°N Longitude: 176.130°W because there is a Convergent boundarie that elevated that mountain (volcanoe) causing magma to move out of the continent surface |
PART III: ASSIGNMENT REFLECTION
Through this assignment I used what we learned in class. Firs, plate boundaries and earthquakes information helped me to understand how the internal processes of earth work. Also, it gave me a better perspective about geography and how it was formed. Also, when I worked on part 2 which is volcanoes I got to better understand how the internal processes of magma work on earth and how it is affected by any other hazard, and creates another hazards as well. First, we were requested to read an article titled: Plate tectonics and people. This article describes how the tectonics plates affect population in diverse ways such as producing natural hazards like earthquakes and volcanoes. On the other hand, it has also created a beautiful scenery of mountains and other natural geological places. On the same way, violent earthquakes have created such horrible catastrophes such as the 7.6 earthquake in Haiti. On the other hand, it creates natural resources such as Oil, gold, and fuel.
The other article was about Unanswered question to the normal population. One of them is extraterrestrial plate boundaries (tectonic plates in other planets). Even though the earth is the only planet that is still volcanic and tectonic active, other planets were active too but they ran out of internal heat. The earth will do it too and earthquakes and volcanoes would cease. Lastly the other unanswered question is what drives the plates. In order to remember this process, I always think about the lava lamp and how it moves up cools down and go up again because of the heat.
